Inspiration Behind the Name
The Mae Chest Bag is named for Dr. Mae Jemison, an American physician and NASA astronaut, who became the first African American woman to travel in space. Born in 1956 in Alabama, Mae grew up in Chicago and held an interest in science from an early age. After attending medical school and serving in the Peace Corps, she set her sights on going into space.
